My 6 days at the bustling Colombo city

From 6th to 11 October I’ve visited the capital Colombo City of the south East Asian country Sri-Lanka, a country with a rich Buddhist heritage famous for its tea leaves.

Colombo is the largest city of Sri-Lanka, which is a busy city with a mixture of modern life with signs of colonial buildings & surrounding sandy beaches. During my visit to Colombo, I stayed at Dehiwala Mount Lavinia, a town located at the western province of Sri-Lanka. Colombo city being the main commercial center of the country is full of Shopping malls, restaurants, old colonial buildings, modern hotels & government premises. During my stay at this busy city, I visited the National Museum, Galle Face Green Beach, Beira Lake, Cargills & Millers building, Independence Square, Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo Fort, Pettah bazaar, Beach Waadiya, Churches, Mosques, Temples, City,Railway museum and Mount Lavinia beach and many other famous landmarks of the city. Srilankan cuisine almost includes rice, coconut and spices which makes it similar to south Indian cuisine. Although Sri Lankan food offers a vivid array of flavor combination, rice & curry makes up the most Srilankan foods.  Also there’s one more key component to many Srilankan dishes & it is Maldives fish. Shopping in Colombo city is a good way to time pass with fun & entertainment. House of Fashion is the biggest departmental store in the whole Sri-Lanka which offers a broad choice with an enormous selection at affordable prices. However Odel, Majestic City & Liberty Plaza are also ideal places for shopping. The transportation at Colombo city is mainly based upon taxis, auto rickshaws, an inter-city train network and bus networks with upgraded roads & highways across Colombo City. Colombo City is a clean city unlike most of the Indian cities which I’ve visited earlier. Colombo city must be praised for its cleanliness as authorities work hard for it while the citizens render their utmost cooperation for the cause. The most amazing place which I’ve visited during this trip was the Nuwara Eliya City. This city located at the Central Province of the country is known as the coolest area in Sri-Lanka with views of valleys, meadows, mountains & scenic greenery. Nuwara Eliya is the heart of the tea growing region of the country, surrounded by rolling mountains & lush green hills.

The kind people of Sri-Lanka with good hearts who know how to respect and treat others with good hospitality really impressed me during my 6 days at Colombo. And yes, it’s that good hospitality of the kind Sri-Lankan people which I like most about this country.

  1. Compared to India, Sri Lanka is better. But Shopping at Sri Lanka is still terrible. Sri Lanka still doesn't have a Mall, If you know what I mean. If we visit a country like Malaysia, we know what a Mall is. Even India has better Malls than Sri Lanka. Arcade has promising brands, but not enough.

The intercity train is just terrible. A tourist would never get on that. Sri Lanka really needs better public transportation.

Nuwara Eliya is a beautiful town, but the there are lot of on going constructions. There are very few places where we can get good food, and the places to stay are unacceptable, except a very few places.

In short, Sri Lanka is better than India, in a lot of ways. Sri Lanka needs better Malls and better public transportation.
