From your Valentine

Romantic true love is a strong feeling of affection attached towards someone special in our lives. Valentine’s Day which is observed on14th February has long been celebrated as a month of romance around the world. However, the origin of Valentine’s Day for the expression of love really isn't romantic at all.

There is a lot of debate and disagreement among scholars about the origins of Valentine’s Day. The word Valentine comes from the Latin word “Valentinus”, meaning “to be strong, powerful, and mighty”. The story of Valentine's Day begins in the 5th century with a Roman emperor named Claudius II and a Christian named as St.Valentine. According to one legend, Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that married men were more emotionally attached to their families and will not make good soldiers. He believed that marriage made the men weak. So he issued an edict forbidding marriage to assure quality soldiers at the empire. It was then St. Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies secretly as he saw the trauma of young innocent lovers who gave up all hopes of being united in a marriage but was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death. The second legend says that St. Valentine; fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed "from your Valentine." The third legend says St. Valentine was imprisoned, tortured and beheaded for practicing Christianity by the order of Roman emperor Claudius II.  However according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by the name of St. Valentine. One was a priest in Rome, second a bishop in Terni, and third was St. Valentine, all these three Valentines were said to have been martyred on 14th February. It is not exactly known why 14th of February is known as Valentine's Day as the history of this day points to several legends while the real history of Valentine's Day is still impossible to be obtained. It is only some legends that are sources of reference for the history of Valentine's Day.

Red roses, a cupid & red hearts are the famous symbols of the Valentine’s Day which is known as the most marked day of love around the world. Red roses were the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is also a color that signifies strong feelings. Cupid is the god of desire, affection, and erotic love in Roman mythology. Cupid today appears shooting his bow to inspire romantic love. It is unclear the origin of the familiar heart shape used for Valentine's celebration. Whatever the odd mixture of origins, messages of affection & love are exchanged around the world by lovers on every year’s 14th February.
