“We have dreams. Sadly for many of us, our dreams end even
before our journey begins. Our potential is ignored, our doors to success
sealed. Most children go to school, while we are kept aside. Deprived just because
we have a disability”. This is
not a statement by me but that was a statement written in one of the ads at
Haveeru Daily newspaper by Care Society with a heading as “Sponsor a Child”. Further more in the ad it is written, “Every child has the Right to Dream, the Right to Choose and
the Right for Education”. Surely
those 3 rights are very important in every child’s life. This organization was registered in the Maldives at the year
1998. Care Society came into
existence under the name of ‘The Young Ties’ at first with six founder members The main focus
of the NGO is promoting and advocating the rights
of people with disabilities. A disability may be physical, cognitive,
mental, sensory, emotional, and developmental or some combination of one of these.
There are mainly 5 types of disabilities. They are Physical disability, Sensory disability, Intellectual disability, Mental health and emotional disabilities and as for
the last Developmental disability. The main
objectives of the NGO includes parent education programs, providing
support services, self help groups, counseling services, empowerment of
disabled people, publication of information materials and many other works
which the society believes as important human rights.

According to care society under the “Sponsor a
child” program, a financial
report will be circulated to the sponsors and if the current financial
situation changes it will be communicated with the sponsor immediately. Under
this program the minimum duration for sponsoring a child would be one year.
Currently Care Society spends Rf 58,500 for the salary of the CDC staff. CDC or
Care Development Centre was established
on 1st August 2001 to provide education and rehabilitation services for
children and youth with disabilities. Further more according to Care
society, sponsored amount will go directly to the child’s educational and
rehabilitation services with the current capacity of CDC. The happy news is Tropicsurf has sponsored 12 children of
Care Development Centre (CDC). Currently care society conducts 13 classes with
the help of 10 lecturers for 44 registered students who are having
disabilities. Still 9 students who are attending CDC are
in need of sponsors. CDC provides services such as Vocational Training Classes, Parent Consultation, Social Club and Physiotherapy
services currently.
People and children with disabilities suffer participation restriction as a problem experienced
through out the society sometimes when involving in life situations. However
disability is a complex phenomenon, reflecting an interaction between features
of a person’s body and features of the society in which he or she lives. So the people and organizations that
are willing to sponsor children under the “sponsor
a child” program, the opportunity is still open. Child Sponsorship forms
are available from the corporate office of Care Society. Care society is
