Modest scholar Dr. Majeed passes away

The first Islamic Minister of Maldives & the first Maldivian to earn a doctorate in Tafsir and Ulum al-Quran, Dr.Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari has passed away today while in the Intensive Care Unit of Lanka Hospital, Sri Lanka at the age of 55. 

Dr. Majeed who had been the Islamic Minister during Ex-President Nasheed’s administration, was hospitalized this past Friday following a stroke at his hotel room at Lanka Hospitals. According to media reports he went under numerous surgeries as well as his condition was poor & was on the ventilator since Sunday. Dr. Bari who studied at the Islamic University of Al-Madinah was the first President of the Centre for Quranic Studies established by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The famed religious scholar also filled the top designation of the High Council on Islamic Affairs of the nation. He was appointed as the country’s first Islamic affairs Minister in the year 2008 by Ex-President Mr. Nasheed, the first democratically elected President of the nation. 
Janaza prayers of Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari who was the president of the Adhaalath Party scholars council will be held tomorrow Wednesday, 23rd May at Jawata Muslim Burial Grounds (Torrington Ave) of Colombo 4 after Zuhr prayers. Dr. Majeed who was also a lecturer at the Maldives National University & politically active with the Maldives United opposition (MUO),  is survived by his wife and 5 children. Tributes have been pouring in for the late scholar who was also one of the founding members of Adhaalath Party which is the only Islamist political party of Maldives. Dr. Baaree who is notable for his contributions in religious knowledge and education is known as a committed reformist & a modest person. May Allah forgive him & and Grant him the highest of Paradise.
