A total of 1,487 candidates are running for this year’s Local Council election 2017, including 1,134 candidates from 5 political parties which includes 523 candidates from PPM, 469 candidates from MDP, 93 candidates from JP, 50 candidates from MDA, 1 candidate from DRP
363 candidates will be contesting this election as independent candidates.
563 Councillors will be elected to 179 island councils, 67 Councillors to 18 atoll councils, and 23 Councillors to 3 city councils.
The local councils are a feature of the decentralization act passed in parliament in April 2010.
The Elections commission will set up around 422 ballot boxes for the election which includes 107 ballot boxes in capital Male' City, 266 ballot boxes across atolls, 7 ballot boxes in resorts, 1 ballot box in Thilafushi Industrial Island, 4 ballot boxes in detention facilities & 1 ballot box overseas, in Srilanka's capital Colombo City
According to Election Commission of Maldives, 255,987 people are eligible to vote in the elections.
Local Council election 2017 will take place with or without the signatures of the candidates, their representatives and political parties.
Opposition Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have declined to sign the voters list.
Final registration list of eligible voters for the upcoming Local Council Elections 2017 is available on Election Commission's official website and can also be checked via SMS.
Around 3,000 officers of Maldives Police Service will be posted at the 470 polling stations across the Maldives.
The local council election 2017 was delayed thrice this year.
