Romania’s most famous missing case

Before six years in Brasvoc, Romania's Cristian Coaca killed and cut his wife Elodia Ghinescu in their apartment and then disposed her body. This case kept bold headlines in the entire Romania for years, being one of the most famous missing person case in Romania's criminal history.

Elodia Ghinescu who was Lawyer in proffession & a mother, disappeared four years ago and although samples of blood were found in her apartment and in her husband's car, her body has not been discovered by police, but five years from the time she went missing, she was declared dead, according to romanian law, and prosecutors went to court against her husband Cristian Coaca. Prosecutors asked for his arrest after the DNA samples gathered from the couple’s home were proved to belong to the missing wife. Cristian have been remanded & detained since December 5, 2012 at the Colibasi Penitentiary since January 30, when Supreme Court prosecutors indicted him in court on charges of murder more than five years after his wife disappeared.  Cioaca who was an ex-cop and the husband of Elodia Ghinescu was convicted by Romania's Arges Tribunal earlier this month on 2nd of July for 22 years in jail for murdering his wife. However, the recent court decision is not final, as it can be further appealed.

Only six other murder convictions without finding a body have been recorded in Romania so far according to the related official authorities. Elodia Ghinescu 38 was last seen alive on August 29th at the year 2007 as confirmed by witness statements and the listing of mobile phones, as well as by the inactivation of her bank accounts. The couple’s only child who is 9-years old is currently with the family of Cioaca’s sister. Romania is the eighth largest country of the EU by area, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union.
