The local NGO Islamic Foundation of the Maldives (IFM's) Religious Scholars’ Council's President & respected religious scholar Sheikh Aboobakr Ibrahim has died today at 4.20am at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). According to reliable close sources to the hugely respected sheikh, he passed away while being admitted at the ICU of IGM Hospital after receiving treatment for suffering a stroke since last week's Thursday. Sheikh Aboobakr Ibrahim who has completed his higher studies from Medina Islamic University of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was 72 years old as he passed. The funeral prayer for Sheikh Aboobakr Ibrahim was held at the county's main mosque Islamic Center of Majid-Ul-Sultan Mohamed Thankurufaan after the afternoon prayer which was led by Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed Ahmed of IFM. A huge amount of public citizens which included personals of different standards of the country & state dignitaries visited the "Aa sahara" cemetry to pay their final respect to Sheikh Aboobakr Ibrahim including the country's first democratically elected President H.E Mr. Mohamed Nasheed. In this article I'd also like to share the shock I got at my early morning wake up as I came to know about the news through Sheikh's NGO's TV station MVTV. After the completion of his higher studies the prominent scholar Sheikh Aboobakr Ibrahim had worked as a lecturer in colleges of both India & Pakistan while he has written several books on different topics of the religion Islam. The Sheikh's latest efforts in the path of Allah at his last ages includes public lectures, seminars, workshops, courses, television programmes (specially through MVTV) and field excursions.Sheikh Aboobakr has also contributed to his organization IFM's works & publications of Islamic books, Islamic educational materials and Maldives first Islamic channel MVTV with great effort. Sheikh Aboobakr Ibrahim is known as a one of the eldest religious scholar of the country who had worked hard to promote the religion of Islam & raise Islamic awareness through out in his life. May Allah give Sheikh's soul lasting peace of Paradise.
